On Sunday at 5:49pm the Belton Fire Dept. received a call of a smoke odor at a nearby church. Three engines responded with mutal aid from Honea Path Quint 1, Cheddar Fire and Williamston RIT. Upon arrival nothing was visible but after entering the building firefighters found smoke and heat in the attic over the sanctuary. Additional units were called and hoselines were stretched. After further investigation an hvac unit appeared to have overheated and burned some of the insulation and duct work although an exact cause is not known. Power was cut to the building while firefighters worked to isolate the problem. No structural damage was found.
