Common Fire Code Violations

Over the next few months, our staff will be out in the city performing fire inspections and conducting pre-fire plans to obtain updated information about your business.  To help make your business more fire safe, please review the following common code violations to see if you may have any issues.  Our inspectors will be looking for these issues as well as others.  As always, we are here to help you so please contact us with any questions or concerns.

Obstructions in Exit Passageways

Remove any/all obstructions in exit passageways.

Exit Lights

All exit lights need to be working properly and properly illuminated.

Emergency Lights

Emergency lights need to be working properly and tested once a month.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers shall be inspected annually or after each use, by a licensed South Carolina contractor.

Fire Alarm Systems Tested Annually

Fire alarm systems and its components must be tested annually, by a licensed South Carolina contractor, including but not limited to fire alarm boxes, audible devices, batteries, and smoke detectors.

Hood Suppression Systems

In commercial cooking operations, the fire suppression system must be tested and certified by a licensed South Carolina contractor every 6 months. All cooking components (ducts, filters, hoods etc.) should be free from grease and cleaned properly.

Extension Cords

Discontinue use of extension cords. Extension cords shall only be used for temporary wiring and shall not be substituted for permanent wiring.
Extension cords shall not be attached to structures or be extended through walls, ceilings, floors, under or through doors or floor coverings. Extension cords may not be plugged into one another.

Electrical

Electrical circuit breaker panels, junction boxes, and outlet boxes, shall be covered, and installation complete.
Maintain a 36” inch clearance in front of electrical panel boxes

Sprinkler System

Sprinkler system shall be tested annually by a licenses South Carolina contractor.

Storage

Storage should be properly maintained
